Michael S. Vrana, M.D. - Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute of New Braunfels

Dr. Michael Vrana is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon. He treats patients with sports injuries including arthroscopic surgery and ligament reconstruction. Joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee, and shoulder are also part of his specialty, with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques including anterior hip replacement, partial knee replacement, hip resurfacing, and accelerated rehabilitation protocols. He also takes care of general orthopedic problems including fractures in adults and children.

Dr. Vrana grew up in Shiner, Texas. After graduating from St. Paul Catholic School, he attended the University of Texas at San Antonio. He received his Physical Therapy degree in 1994 from the Health Science Center in San Antonio, graduating summa cum laude. He received the academic achievement award, given to the highest ranking student in physical therapy. He worked as a physical therapist in San Antonio for 8 years. In San Antonio, he received an outstanding service award from the rehabilitation services department at Methodist Hospital.

After deciding to further pursue his education, Dr. Vrana earned his medical degree from the Health Science Center in San Antonio in 2006.  He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, awarded to the top academic medical students. Dr. Vrana also received the Charles A. Rockwood Jr. Outstanding Student Award in Orthopedics. Following medical school, he completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at University Hospital in San Antonio. During his residency, he was awarded the Best Resident Teaching Award. 

After residency, he trained with Dr. Jesse DeLee in San Antonio for a sports medicine fellowship and trained with Dr. John Evans for joint replacement. He also trained with Dr. Mark Casillas for foot & ankle treatment as well as Dr. Phil Jacobs and Dr. Brad Tolin for joint replacement and sports medicine of the shoulder and knee.

Dr. Vrana is active with local student athletes. He and his wife have two sons. They stay busy with work, school, and sports, and they enjoy camping whenever possible.
